It was a stormy night in April. I woke up in a cold wet bed. My stomach was cramping. It hurt I held my stomach and breathed. It was too early. The baby wasn’t due for another 5 weeks!
The pain intensified and when blood began trickling down my leg I was terrified. I knew I should have phoned the hospital but I was scared and I called the only person I trusted…
“Nick? I need you to come here right now. Its the baby.”
Turns out Nicholas wasn’t Much help but he did call the hospital. Who told him that he would have to deliver the baby himself…
I was only in labour for two hours but with one final push I fell back on the bed.
I heard Nick gasp and then a very small cry… “Congratulations Erin. You have a little girl.”
“Hey little princess, you are such a little stunner!. It wont be long before you are running around with Taylor and wreaking havoc!”
He handed me the Baby. “Hello little girl. I’m your mum. I’ll always be here for you. I love you.”
Cradling the child felt kind of weird but in a good way. She felt so delicate and warm.
“What are you gonna call her?”
I looked into my new daughter’s big blue eyes. “Hayley. Her name is Hayley.” She is the only part of me that came with me from the hospital. She is the child that the doctors will follow. From now until the day she dies…
“Hayley Elizabeth Simm.”
“It was my grandma’s name.”
Taylor was oblivious to all this. And didn’t mind getting woken up in the middle of the night. She just played in Hayley’s toy box.
It was about 5am when Nicholas went home. I placed Hayley in the crib and sat in the chair. What had I gotten myself into? I was 17, I was a mum and my child would be followed her entire life by aliens from another galaxy.
I was just drifting off to sleep when I heard the door to the nursery open. Looking up at who it was my mouth dropped open. “But I watched you die.”
